Packing for an international adventure can feel overwhelming, but with the right essentials, it’s a breeze. From your passport and travel accessories to must-have gadgets and toiletries, this collection of items will ensure you’re ready for anything your journey throws your way. Take a look at the essentials that should be at the top of your packing list for a stress-free trip

Whether you’re embarking on a relaxing beach getaway or an exciting adventure through bustling cities, packing for an international trip can be a daunting task. While packing lists can vary depending on your destination and the activities you have planned, there are a few essentials that should always make the cut. Below, we've compiled a list of must-have items that will keep you prepared for any trip, no matter where you're going or what you're doing. From practical necessities to travel-sized luxuries, this list covers everything you’ll need for a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Before heading out on an extended trip, make sure to stop your mail through USPS to prevent your mailbox from overflowing and to keep your home looking occupied. You should also consider pausing your car insurance if your vehicle will be sitting unused — many insurance companies allow you to temporarily lower your coverage to just the state minimums, saving you money while you're away. It's a simple way to avoid paying full price for a car you’re not driving!

  • Travel Essentials

    • Passport

    • Copies of Passport: Keep digital copies of both your information page and the final page with the barcode and number saved on your phone. These are essential for quick identification and verification if needed.

    • Charles Schwab Debit Card: It reimburses all ATM fees worldwide, saving money and hassle. It’s smart to transfer funds into the account before departing to ensure easy, fee-free access to cash while abroad.

    • Local Currency Cash: You can complete this at your local bank before departure; be sure to allow 1–2 weeks for processing

    • Orange: Easily set up an eSIM for affordable mobile data as soon as you land, without needing to find a local SIM card. It’s a convenient and reliable way to stay connected while traveling internationally.

    • Universal Travel Adapter: I like this one because it can charge up to six devices at once, and the charging prongs slide out, so there’s no need to worry about carrying or losing small parts.

    • Luggage Tags: In case your luggage is lost, it helps with identification and makes it easy to confirm you haven’t picked up someone else’s bag by mistake.

    • STEP Program: Before traveling internationally, enroll in the free STEP program to get safety updates and ensure the U.S. Embassy can assist you in an emergency — it only takes a few minutes at https://step.state.gov!

  • Tech & Gadgets

    • Bluetooth Noise-Canceling Headphones and/or Airpods

    • Portable Charger

    • AirTags: Easy to track your luggage or valuables in real time, giving you peace of mind while traveling. If something gets lost, you can quickly locate it without relying on airline updates.

    • Airfly: Connect your wireless headphones to in-flight entertainment systems, so you can enjoy movies and music without using uncomfortable airline headphones.

  • Health & Comfort

    • Pill Organizer: Carrying essentials like Advil and activated charcoal can save you during travel. Advil helps with headaches, muscle pain, or minor injuries, while charcoal can ease stomach issues from unfamiliar food. It's also smart to pack a small first aid kit, motion sickness tablets, and any personal medications you might need, just in case.

    • Water Bottle with Filter: A water bottle with a built-in filter is essential for travel, as it allows you to drink from almost any tap or water source safely.

    • Snack: Carrying a snack ensures you’re never caught hungry during long travel days or unexpected delays. It’s a convenient way to keep your energy up and avoid overpriced or unappealing food options at airports or on the go.

    • Rain Jacket or Umbrella: You never know when it might rain, and without an umbrella, it can quickly ruin your day

    • Hand Sanitizer

  • Clothing:

    • Packing Cubes: Compression packing cubes help maximize luggage space by reducing bulk, allowing you to fit more in your bag and stay organized during your travels

    • A set of clothes and a toothbrush for the plane: Packing one day of clothes and a toothbrush in your carry-on ensures you're prepared for unexpected delays or lost luggage, helping you stay comfortable and fresh during travel.

    • Crossbody: Perfect for travel because it keeps your hands free and your essentials close, offering easy access and added security.

  • Safety & Security:

    • Safety Cable Lock: a great travel companion for securing your bag while at airports or on trains. You can easily attach it to a fixed object and use a travel lock to tie your bags together, so you don’t have to worry about theft while you’re not looking.

    • Anti-Theft Zipper Lock: Adds an extra layer of security to your bag, preventing thieves from easily opening it and accessing your valuables. It’s a simple yet effective way to protect your belongings while traveling.

    • Luggage Locks: Provides peace of mind by securing your bags during travel, ensuring that your belongings stay safe from tampering. They’re essential for protecting your items, especially when checking in bags or using public transport.

    • Money Belt: While I typically don't use a money belt, it can be a useful option for travelers who want extra security. It keeps cash, cards, and important documents close to your body, reducing the risk of pickpockets.

  • Miscellaneous:

    • Sunglasses

    • Tide Stick

    • Travel Clothesline: A must if your trip is longer than two weeks, allowing you to easily dry clothes in your hotel room or while on the go. It helps reduce the need for frequent laundry stops and keeps your wardrobe fresh

    • Deck of Cards: Perfect for downtime during your trip, providing easy entertainment while waiting or relaxing.

    • Carabiner: A versatile tool for travel, allowing you to easily attach bags, water bottles, or other items to your backpack or luggage.

  • If You Have a Rental Car:

    • Dash Cam: A smart travel accessory, providing peace of mind by recording your journey for safety and security. It can also be useful in case of accidents or disputes while driving

    • Mesh Wire Luggage Protector: A smart choice for keeping your belongings secure while traveling. Designed to protect your bag from theft, it features an anti-theft design that deters pickpockets and ensures your items stay safe, even in crowded places

  • Bags I Travel With:

    • Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L: I travel with the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55L because it’s practical for international trips. Without wheels, it’s easier to carry up stairs and avoid elevator issues. The nylon material lets me squeeze in more than I expect, and most airlines don’t question it as a carry-on, making it the perfect travel companion.

    • Nomatic Toiletry Bag 2.0: I use the Nomatic Toiletry Bag 2.0 because it keeps my few toiletries organized and easy to access, even if I don’t carry much. It’s compact, durable, and perfect for minimalist packing.

    • Fjallraven Skule 28 Backpack: I use the Fjällräven Skule 28 Backpack because it’s the perfect size for daily essentials, with great organization and durable, weather-resistant material. It’s comfortable to carry, making it ideal for both city exploration and outdoor adventures
